A multiaxial inertial macroelement for bridge abutments

This paper proposes a multiaxial macroelement for bridge abutments that can be included in the global structural model of to carry out nonlinear dynamic analyses with very much smaller computational effort than achieved using continuum representations embankment and foundation soil behaviour. The proposed derives constitutive force–displacement relationship within rigorous thermodynamic framework includes important features non-linearity directional coupling characterizing interactions abutment soil. In analysis, frequency-dependent response system is simulated through combination appropriate participating masses. calibration procedure based on assessment its ultimate capacity at small displacements, it shown these ingredients derived standardised procedures. paper, validated against results fully coupled numerical reference soil–abutment system, under both static seismic loading conditions. We show two models achieve similar predictions maximum permanent deformations (less 10–14% difference, respectively) suite three-axis events.
